Become a DJ on KMKR
We have a process our DJ and content creator hopefuls must complete in order to learn the rules of the FCC, how to use our equipment, how to handle issues while on the air, and how to create their content.
Below is the list of steps you must take to get your show on the air at KMKR.
EACH STEP MUST BE COMPLETED IN ORDER. YOU SHOULD NOT MOVE ON TO THE NEXT STEP UNTIL YOU COMPLETE THE CURRENT STEP.
Step 1: Submit your show idea
Fill out our "What Would your Show Be?" form. Though at this point we cannot guarantee we can air your show idea, you may move on to the next steps if you so choose. Upon reviewing your idea, we will talk to you about your show's content.
Read the KMKR Handbook
Once you've made us aware that you're interested in having a show on KMKR, you should read our KMKR Handbook to prepare for Step 2: taking the handbook quiz.
Step 2: Complete the Handbook Quiz with a 100% score
Take the Handbook Quiz to get acquainted with our studio, being on the air live, creating content and keeping the FCC happy.
A score of 100% on the handbook quiz is REQUIRED before you can move on to Step 3: taking the indecency quiz. However, you may re-take the handbook quiz multiple times until you get 100%.
Read An Introduction to Indecency
Once you've scored 100% on the handbook quiz, you can read An Introduction to Indecency to prepare for Step 3: taking the indecency quiz.
Step 3: Complete the Indecency Quiz with a 100% score
Take the Indecency Quiz to learn more about the nuances of the FCC's loose definition of indecency and the repercussions violations can have for the station and for the DJ.
A score of 100% on the indecency quiz is REQUIRED before you can move on to Step 4: filling out the timeslot application. However, you may re-take the indecency quiz multiple times until you get 100%.
Step 4: Apply for a timeslot
Once you've scored 100% on the indecency quiz, fill out the timeslot application so we can get an idea of what broadcast hours work for you. We cannot guarantee you will get your first or even second choice of timeslot. Eventually, we want the studio to be accessible to our DJs 24/7. However, for security reasons, 24 hour access is not possible at this time. But as we continue to grow and the new studio gets constructed we will one day be able to eliminate the restrictions currently set for live broadcast hours and give our content creators any timeslot they want provided they don't overlap with one another.
After you have submitted your timeslot application you may move on to Step 5: scheduling a DJ interview.
Step 5: Schedule a DJ interview
When you've completed steps 1 through 4, email KMKR Management to schedule your DJ interview. Please let us know what date and time work for you.
DJ meetings are held at Xerocraft Makerspace, 101 W 6th Street and 9th Ave.
Interviews are 15 minutes long and consist of clarifying FCC rules on indecency, addressing possible issues with the show as described in the What Would Your Show Be? form, and how to get trained in producing your show and using the studio equipment.
